A retired secondary school teacher, Mr. Andrew Imuekheme, was tragically killed by suspected herdsmen on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, while returning from his farm in Ikabigbo community, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.
Reports indicate that Mr. Imuekheme encountered the herdsmen, who abducted him and dragged him into the bush where he was ultimately killed. A local eyewitness, who spoke anonymously, revealed that earlier in the day, a woman narrowly escaped the same group of gunmen, prompting vigilantes and local hunters to mobilize for a bush combing operation.
During the search, the vigilantes found the teacher’s motorcycle and shoes before eventually discovering his body in the evening, bearing gunshot and machete wounds. This marks the third killing by herders in the community, following previous deaths of a Catholic priest and the chairman of hunters in the area during a separate attack two years ago.
The traditional ruler of Ikabigbo, Chief Braimah Alegeh, condemned the killing and urged the Edo State government and security agencies to intervene promptly, emphasizing that the community is predominantly made up of peace-loving farmers who need protection to safely tend their farms.
As of the time of reporting, the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, had yet to issue an official comment but promised to provide a response after attending a function.
The late Mr. Andrew Imuekheme, who was in his early 60s, leaves behind a nonagenarian father and other family members grieving their loss.
